NEXT MEETING : FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16
NEXT WEEK: Our speaker will be Assemblyman Steve Otis
THIS PAST WEEK : We hosted the annual Rye-Harrison Sportsmanship Luncheon at the Whitby Castle in Rye, NY.
President Jason opened up the meeting and welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance and Patriotic song followed.
Jason welcomed our new Rye City Schools Superintendant Brian Monyhan and Rye High School Principal Pat Taylor. He also indicated, present are two of our newer members, Rye Middle School Principal, Dr. Ann Edwards and Rye City Police Commissioner Michael Corcoran who will be our Honoree at the Sept. 27 Rye Rotary Golf Outing this year.
Jason honored DG Lora Hugelemeyer, one of our own, who also was present.
He proceeded announcing guests with Head Coach Dino Garr, NY State Senator George Latimer, Councilwoman Julie Killian.
Jason deferred to Harrison to make their introductions. Coach Dino Garr introduced his assistant coaches and players and commended their character and talents. Coach Garr has always been the beacon of light when it comes to fostering fair play, playing to the best of one’s abilities and always exhibiting honor amongst and between all players.
Jason then introduced our two keynote speakers, former NY Giant Patrick Morrison and Coach Harold Crocker.
First to speak was Patrick Morrison. Hailing from New Rochelle though born in Great Britain and, as a former NY Giant, he said to cherish the moments of playing as they don’t last forever. It is the time of your youth that is short lived. He went on to mention his background as sad in England when his mother had to leave him with relatives while she went forward to secure a permanent life for her family in America. As life became more complicated and, with memories of having to endure abuses, he took his frustrations out on the football fields in the school he attended. At that point, his coaches taught him better life skills by redirecting his anger and pain into more useful and productive behavior. As he was blessed with sports talents, he received the Most Valuable Player award, as his direction was going toward football as a profession. With coaches guiding his way, he soon realized that all people carry unseen “baggage”. As a behavioral specialist, he emphasized the importance for adults to add structure to young people both for sportsmanship and for life. He recalled when New Rochelle High School became a New York State Championship and how they declined. He emphasized there was a lesson learned in the midst of all the pain and anger. He remembered one of the coaches saying to them to “act bigger” than any one individual and that the value of sportsmanship teaches rises and falls. A life lesson to be remembered forever. At the end of each game, the game is over. Another day comes with another opportunity. The bigger picture is what really matters. Adults and coaches are the most influential people in young people’s lives, he noted. Patrick then introduced his own coach, who helped him take a better path, Harold Crocker.
Harold Crocker commended, Patrick Morrison’s presentation. As his former coach, Harold also was a very well known and respected coach, a NY Giants scout, and held numerous football association positions. He commended the Rye-Harrison Sportsmanship Luncheon as one of the finest traditions,as it supports the entire fabric of the communities. He went on to say that rivalry and competition is a set of behavior patterns. Playing fairly, respecting your opponents, your coaches and accepting decisions is all part of the game. Learning from “the adults in their lives, learning from their parents and their coaches should teach students how to respect themselves first and all around them as well. “To win with dignity or lose with grace” for there is where lessons are learned and friends defined. “Following the rules” are essential examples and working along with your teammates must be understood and realized. Always putting forth your best effort and also learning to deal with roadblocks is learned by practicing sportsmanship. He emphasized that the most important thing is to enjoy what you do and be the best you can be in all the things you do. He said to treat others as you wish to be treated which will apply forever. “Doing the right thing” is what really counts, he said.
President Jason thanked both gentlemen for sharing all the valuable information and experiences and they were applauded by all.
Rich Martinelli encouraged all to attend the “First Annual Rye Rotary Golf Outing” to be held at Apawamis on Tuesday, September 27 and to register online at “ryerotary.org”
